Christian Hall, a 19-year-old Asian American teen, was fatally shot by state police on the bridge of a Pennsylvania overpass on December 30th. As reported by WNEP, police originally responded to reports of a distraught man with a gun on the bridge.

In a statement released by the Pennsylvania State Police on the day of the shooting, police claimed that Christian became uncooperative and pointed a gun at the troopers, prompting them to fire and strike Christian.

However, a viral video was recently shared by Benjamin Crump, a civil rights attorney who represented the families of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, that appears to contradict the events presented in the police statement. In the video, police seem to fire at Christian despite him having both hands raised.

Crump later discussed how it appears that Christian was in the midst of a mental health crisis, "He was having a crisis. There is a suggestion that he was contemplating suicide. He was crying out for help.” "Christian Hall needed a helping hand, but yet he got bullets while he had his hands up."

Christian was the adopted son of multiethnic parents, Fe and Gareth Hall, who were understandably devastated by the tragedy. In a statement, his mother Fe asked state police to put themselves in her shoes, “If that was your child on the bridge and he needed help, would you be OK? Would you accept it if your fellow troopers shot and killed him instead of helping him? Will you be able to sleep at night knowing that your son will never be home, that you’ll never see him get married, that he’ll never have kids, he’ll never grow old, because your fellow troopers shot him dead?”

Christian’s aunt also spoke out about the tragic shooting.

Now, the family is demanding answers. Attorneys for Christian’s family are asking for the Pennsylvania attorney general’s office to conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.

Devon Jacob, an attorney for the family, said, “This needs a completely independent look. These troopers, while they are state police, the fact is they work with local police and local prosecutors to prosecute their cases. It is simply impossible to have an independent investigation when you're investigating people that you work with every day. This needs to go to Attorney General Josh Shapiro.” The incident is currently under review by the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office.
