Elementary School Zoom-bombed with Racial Slurs and Nudity During Lunar New Years Celebration

This incident is just one in a long series of racist attacks that have targeted Asian Americans in recent weeks.

Bay Valley Chinese School, a private Chinese school located in Danville, California was having its virtual Lunar New Year celebration last week when it was disrupted by a group of “Zoom bombers” that hijacked the celebration and began exposing themselves and shouting racist slurs at the elementary-aged children.

The parent of a five-year-old girl who attended the celebration told NBC Bay Area news that she was watching the celebration with her daughter, when she suddenly saw a message in the Zoom chat that said “ching chong.”

She started responding to the racial slur, but then things got worse. The hijackers started playing racially offensive music and exposed themselves. The parent said that images of full frontal nudity were displayed on the screen until she quickly shut the laptop screen, “To be exposed to this at such a young age is painful. And it’s not something as a parent I would want my daughter to experience but she did.”

In a statement, the president of San Ramon Valley Unified Board, Susanna Wong Ordway who attended the celebration said, “I am very saddened and angry at the racist incident that happened at the virtual event celebrating the Chinese New Year in our community. This is one of too many incidents that have targeted Asians and Asian Americans, including the violent attacks in San Francisco, Oakland and throughout our country.”

This incident is just one in a long string of attacks that have targeted the Asian American community in recent weeks.
