Nickelodeon Launches Avatar Studios to Expand the World of “Avatar: The Last Airbender”

Coming first is an animated feature-length film that’ll start production later this year.

Nickelodeon has launched Avatar Studios, a division dedicated solely to creating new original content based in the world of “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” Both Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the original creators and executive producers of the show, will return to lead the studio as co-chief creative officers.

The first project that the studio is undertaking is an animated feature-length film that’ll start production later this year. Content created by the studio is being made for Paramount+, the streaming service by ViacomCBS that’s set to launch May 4th, as well as other third party streaming platforms.

The projects from the studio follow Nickelodeon’s run of the original “Avatar: The Last Airbender” from 2005 to 2008 which depicted Avatar Aang and his friends defeating Fire Lord Ozai as well as its sequel “The Legend of Korra” which aired on Nickelodeon beginning from 2012 and ran for four seasons.

The series has expanded to include a graphic novel series created by DiMartino as well as M. Night Shyamalan’s live-action movie. The studio will not be involved in the creation of Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series that is still in development.
