Restaurant Names Dish "COVID Mac" Because It Has Chinese Ingredients
The restaurant refused to apologize after being called out for its racist marketing.
Lennie’s Hoagies, a restaurant located in Philadelphia, has been drawing criticism for their decision to name a dish on their menu “COVID Mac” due to its Chinese ingredients.
After the backlash, the restaurant has since removed “COVID Mac” from their menu, but are seemingly apathetic to its racist implications. As reported by CBS Philly, when a concerned patron called into the restaurant asking them to issue an apology, he was met with a stark refusal.
“We’ve dropped the name so what’s the big deal?” said the restaurant representative who answered the phone.
This incident is yet another example of the anti-Asian sentiment that’s emerging across the nation and couldn’t have come at a worse possible time, as Asians continue to be racially targeted. The restaurant’s Yelp page has since seen an influx of one-star reviews.
