Satnam Singh, a 65-year-old Asian owner of a grocery store in Ogden, Utah, was shot and killed while working at his store this past Sunday, as reported by KSL.

Ogden police released a statement saying, “The preliminary investigation revealed that the unknown suspect and the victim communicated for a short period of time and at one point, the suspect fired a pistol at the victim, striking him.”

Police released surveillance footage of the incident, which showed the suspected perpetrator, who was wearing a blue surgical mask, black gloves, an Oakland Raiders hoodie, black sweatpants, and dark colored shoe, walking through the aisles before picking up a few items and walking to the counter. The clip ends with the man approaching the checkout counter, before the shooting occurred.

Local residents mourned Sing’s death.

Ogden resident Bonnie Adams told KSL, “I was devastated. I was shocked. This is a store that kept the community together.”

Others recounted their memories of visiting the grocery story during their childhood, describing Singh not only as a local grocer, but as someone who really cared, “I've been coming here since I was a little girl. He called me Chicken Little. He was the kind of man that if you were hungry, he'd always give you food.”

Another talked about how Singh helped her and her daughter when they were homeless, “I was going through a really hard time in my life. We were homeless, we had nowhere to go. He let me hang out in his parking lot for a safe place. This was a long time ago, but he took care of me and my family. He had a really big heart.”
