18-Year-Old Asian Woman Brutally Attacked and Called Racial Slurs in California Skatepark

I’d rather bear this violence then my halmoni. But that’s not how pain and hate works. And I know that the hate that touched me yesterday touches my community, and reaches every other community of minorities in the US.

An 18-year-old Asian woman, who asked to be identified by their first name Jenna (she/they), was brutally attacked at the Tustin Legacy Skatepark in Tustin, California this past Sunday, April 11th. The incident escalated over the course of a three hour period.

The perpetrator began by making sexual comments and asking if she was Asian, then proceeded to ask for their phone number and their age. The man then began to yell racial slurs at Jenna, such as “Commie btch,” “North Korean whre,” and “nuclear terrorist,” along with other homophobic and sexist slurs. He then tore Jenna’s shirt off, after which she had to be given new clothes by a stranger.

The attack left Jenna with a concussion, right ankle fracture, a chip fracture in their left scapula, as well as numerous bruises and pepper spray burns.

Although bystanders eventually stepped in to help after the incident became violent, Jenna says that they should’ve stepped in much sooner, “He attacked me because I stood up for another girl who he was trying to harass. I say these things because although I was helped by a number of kind people, this should never have happened. This man has made many appearances at the skatepark and no one has stopped him. He made remarks to me and many others and no one stopped him, he threatened me with physical violence and no one stopped him. I maced him AND he still was able to attack me. It was only after I sustained injuries that people began to physically intervene. I should have been protected better.”

Jenna then added, “I’d rather bear this violence then my halmoni. But that’s not how pain and hate works. And I know that the hate that touched me yesterday touches my community, and reaches every other community of minorities in the US.”

A GoFundMe to cover Jenna’s medical bills was shared with AsianFeed.
