A 64-year-old Asian woman, identified as Ke Chieh Meng, was fatally stabbed as she walked her two dogs in the La Sierra neighborhood of Riverside, California. Police started receiving calls about the stabbing just before 7:30 am, but the coroner’s office determined the attack occurred just around 7 am.

The stabbing occurred on Golden Avenue, about 40 feet north of Stonewall Drive, as reported by NBC Los Angeles. After the attack, Meng was rushed to nearby Riverside Community Hospital and was pronounced dead at 8:39 am.

The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Stephanie Montoya, a homeless individual from LA County. Detectives interviewed the suspect and do not believe race was a factor in the attack.

The suspect was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center for suspicion of murder and was held without bail. Montoya was previously arrested this past Tuesday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon but was released due to an emergency bail scheduled related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Anyone with information regarding the attack is asked to contact Detective Dan Mercadefe at 951-353-7103 or DMercadefe@RiversideCA.gov, or Detective Brett Stennett at 951-353-7213 or BStennett@RiversideCA.gov.
