Asian Women are Dominating YouTube and We're Living For It

Looking for some new Asian YouTubers to binge this summer? Look no further, we got you covered 🄰

In recent years, Gen Z content creators have taken over YouTube as young teenagers all around the world increasingly realized that they could reach meteoric fame by simply picking up a camera and filming themselves. The rise of Gen Z YouTubers has facilitated the creation of a wildly popular niche of ā€œaestheticā€ YouTubers who are united by the following similarities: an ā€˜unfiltered’ approach to filming in which professionally produced mini-movies are traded for relatable vlogs of everyday life, thumbnails adorned with handwritten fonts and doodles, and of course, lots of zoom-ins and quirky editing features. Many female Asian and Asian American creators have utilized this niche to launch and sustain highly successful online careers.Ā

Here are 5 of our favorite Asian and Asian American YouTubers for you to check out!

1. Jazzy Le

20-year-old beauty and lifestyle vlogger Jazzy Le is not afraid to get real with her viewers. While her content ranges from vlogs on dates with her boyfriend to fashion videos in which she styles trendy outfits to help her audience up their wardrobe game, her most popular videos are her sit-down, chit-chat style videos. In these types of videos, Le takes on the role of a caring, yet bluntly honest older sister to her 590K subscribers as she speaks candidly on personal topics like body image, growing up Asian American, female hygiene, sexual health, relationships, and more. Le has been praised for creating a safe space for women to discuss otherwise heavily stigmatized female issues and educating many young women who do not have easy access to a lot of this information. Don't let her bright red hair and sharp eyeliner fool you: Le is a huge softie, and it shows when she gets vulnerable with her viewers.

2. Linh Truong

19-year-old Georgetown University student and content creator Linh Truong is artsy and adorable. Her videos are artfully crafted, following a visually appealing color scheme of blues, oranges, and greens and filled with beautiful cinematic shots of her everyday life. Similarly to Le, Truong dabbles in all sorts of different content with her YouTube channel, featuring anything from vlogs of her life at Georgetown University to outfit lookbooks to room makeovers to even helping her followers learn how to grow their own businesses and platforms (see above). However, unlike Le, she isn't afraid to show her nerdy side; some of Truong's most popular videos center around Animal Crossing, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Minecraft, and building a PC from scratch. Even if her videos cannot be neatly typified into any one category, each of them is unique in their own way and sure to be not only aesthetically pleasing but also entertaining.

3. Melanie Locke

Seattle native and Pepperdine University undergraduate student Melanie Locke is your new go-to source for anything and everything ✨trendy✨. She loves testing out popular TikTok trends and remaking Pinterest fashion looks on a budget to show her viewers what lives up to the hype and what doesn't. Additionally, her most popular and frequently uploaded videos are clothing hauls in which she shows and often models new items of clothing she has recently purchased to give her viewers inspiration for their own wardrobes (see above!). If you want to find out how to stay on trend this summer for the low, then Melanie Locke is your gal.

4. Kaiti Yoo

It’s safe to say that there’s no one else running the YouTube game like Kaiti Yoo. Her videos are insanely unique and creative; one of her most popular series revolves around her choosing outfits to match popular archetypes like college majors (see above), zodiac signs, a24 characters, and even social media apps, displaying both a keen eye for style and sense of humor. Yoo has also recently been leading a ā€˜digital diaries’ series in which her subscribers get a closer look into her everyday life and inner thoughts as she vlogs her daily routine and opens up about personal issues. No matter what mood you may be in, Yoo's channel has got you covered—whether you want to be entertained by her lighthearted fashion videos or relaxed by her laidback daily vlogs and soothing voice, there’s a place for you with Yoo.Ā

5. JENerationDIY

A true OG, 22-year-old Canadian content creator Jennifer Zhang (better known as JENerationDIY) has been an integral part of the DIY community on YouTube for over five years, initially going viral in 2014 with her room decor and organization videos. Since then, Zhang has stayed true to her roots with the continuation of art-related videos, but she has progressed to taking on more complex projects, such as entire room renovations and 'thrift flips' in which she takes a traditionally 'ugly' clothing piece from a thrift store and transforms it into a trendy, wearable piece ready to be worn. Zhang has also recently branched out to music production under the moniker JEN Z (we love the wordplay) with the release of her first single, "Falling to Your Knees," in early 2020. If you're ever bored this summer and need something to do, JENerationDIY is perfect for you—Zhang has an endless supply of DIYs you can do right from the comfort of your home.
