Nathan Chen kicked off the 2022 Winter Olympics with a dazzling near-perfect performance.
22-year-old Chen set a personal best to win the men’s short program in the team event with a score of 111.71. His showing, combined with strong performances from his teammates left Team USA in first place with 28 points after the first day of the three-day event. Athletes representing the Russian Olympic Committee are currently in second and athletes representing China are currently in third.
“Any time you skate a good program, whether it’s in practice or competition, it feels good, so I’m pretty happy right now,” Chen said, downplaying the significance of the occasion. “It feels great to have a short program I actually skated well, at an Olympic experience,” he said with a small chuckle, referencing his performance at the 2018 Olympics. “I’ll take as much as I can from this experience and take it day-by-day from here.”
“We certainly have a great team,” Chen said to NBC. “That’s the amazing thing about a team event. We can all rely on each other. I’m excited to see how these guys do in the next couple of days.”
