A Critic’s Review Calling Pixar’s ‘Turning Red’ “Unrelatable” and “Exhausting” Went Viral - Here’s How People Reacted
The review quickly garnered hundreds of negative reactions online and was pulled in response, in addition to an apology.
A review by CinemaBlend’s Sean O’Connell explaining why Pixar’s new Asian-centric film ‘Turning Red’ was “unrelatable” and “exhausting” went viral after drawing large amounts of criticism.
In the review, O’Connell complained that the film’s emphasis on the background and experiences of its central character, 13-year-old Meilin (Mei) Lee, made it isolating and unrelatable.
He wrote, "I recognized the humour in the film, but connected with none of it. By rooting Turning Red very specifically in the Asian community of Toronto, the film legitimately feels like it was made for Domee Shi's friends and immediate family members. Which is fine — but also, a tad limiting in its scope."
The review quickly garnered hundreds of negative reactions online and was pulled in response, in addition to an apology by O’Connell.
