A Live Action Stage Adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ is Set to Debut This Fall

It’s set to open at London’s Barbican arts complex.

A live-action stage adaptation of Studio Ghibli’s 1988 film ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ is set to debut this fall.

The stage adaptation is being spearheaded by famed Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi and the Royal Shakespeare Company. It’s set to open at London’s Barbican arts complex in collaboration with Improbable and Nippon TV, as reported by Variety.

Hisaishi said regarding the adaptation, “In Japan, many people are passionate about theatre and musicals, but there are no original Japanese shows or musicals performed in the world. ‘Totoro’ is a Japanese work famous throughout the world, and so this stage adaptation could have the potential to reach global audiences. That’s what I thought, and I told Mr. Miyazaki ‘I want to see such a show’ and he said ‘yes, only if you are going to do it.’"

A video showing the process of bringing the production to life can be seen in the following slides.
