A mother in Japan recently shared a heartwarming story from her seven-year-old’s first shopping trip alone.

She first shared the story on social media alongside a picture of a receipt, which she said was from her seven-year-old son’s shopping trip after she asked him to pick up a few items from the nearby store (similar to the shopping trips taken by kids on the popular TV series ‘Old Enough’).

She gave her son a 1000-yen bill and told him that he could use any leftover money to buy himself some treats.

As shown on the receipt, he initially had five items in his basket that came out to exactly 1000 yen including groceries such as seaweed and squid.

However, at the register one problem came about - he hadn’t accounted for sales tax and didn’t have money for all of his items. He now faced the dilemma of having to choose an item to put back.

Out of the five items in his basket, three were items on the list given by his mother. With the leftover money he had planned on buying ice cream for himself as well as some sparkling water to surprise his mom with her favorite drink.

Although many seven-year-olds may have forgoed the sparkling water in favor of the ice cream, he decided that surprising his mom and keeping the sparkling water was more important.

When he returned home and his mom saw the canceled item on the receipt she quickly pieced together what happened and wrote, “It brings tears to my eyes just imagining him at the store.” Others on social media were quick to join in commenting, “That must have been the best-tasting sparkling water ever.”
