Hayao Miyazaki’s final film ‘The Boy and the Heron’ is set to make its international debut when it opens this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
The film will be the first Japanese or animated film to open the festival, earning the honor after becoming the biggest debut in Studio Ghibli’s history with a $13.2M opening weekend in Japan despite no promotion or marketing.
The film is described to "follow a boy named Mahito Maki, who discovers an abandoned tower in his new town and enters a fantastical world with a talking grey heron."

The film is expected to release in North America later this year.
